Kinja'd!!!

So I’m TAing at a Lego robotics camp and my fellow TA’s are devising a plan to beat the dragsters the little kids are building.

Them “Our dragster needs to be front wheel drive”

Me - “Dragsters are not normally Front wheel drive”

TA 2 - “Rear wheel drive has better speed and power”

TA 1- “It needs to be front wheel drive to drift”

TA 2- “True”

TA 1 “Drift King...”

I dont know how to respond

do they know what drifting even is? Alternately ask “do you even drift bro?”

If they like tremendous lift-off oversteer, they’re right on the money.

That’s just about the only thing you can rescue from what they said.

Well, let them build a front wheel drive dragster. It might work because Lego motors don’t really have the power to loose grip. You might could try AWD for yours or maybe an actual transmission (2 speed is the easiest). How long is the track and what parts are you allowed to use?

Parts from an NXT 2.0 kit. The motors are torquey but slow rpm wise. The only true way to get a Lego RC car to drift is to take of the rubber of the wheels and go that way.

I'll pull up videos of RWD cars drifting. :P

I don't think that's happening haha

Why would you want a dragster to drift?

If you want to drift wouldn’t you need smooth back wheels making FWD effective to actually putting power down and moving the car?

So is it a drag race or a drift compitition? I've also found that electrical tape around the wheels provides a nice mix of control and slides.

The kids are building a finish line type thing that will determine who crossed the first. It is not a drift competition at all, but for some reason he wants it to be a drifter.

Lego cars generally aren't fast enough for lift-off oversteer. It'd be super fun if they were though!

I don’t know why.

Yeah it could work, but indirectly he made a statement that RWD cars don't drift.

“Bro, do you even physics?” This is the only proper response to their stupidity. FWD can be damn quick, hell you can even set it up for lift oversteer, but for drifting? *facepalm* Besides, what the hell does drifting have anythign to do with building a dragster?

The solution is to build a car that kicks all their asses.

So they're building a finish line and cars to finish with. I'd say lots of gearing because of the NXT motor torque (I've found that most successful.)

I know nothing about the Mindstorm kits. I had no idea they were soo damn expensive!

From what I’ve read up though, the intelligent brick has input for up to 4 motors. Couldn’t you get a motor to power every wheel? That would be the best use to get the most power to the ground, wouldn’t it? I assume you can’t daisy-chain the motors in sequence to get more power, could you?

AWD and all plastic wheels gives you the smoothest slides that are controllable and not bouncy. But that only works if you want to drift.

Today you learned that Daily Drives a dragon has absolutely no life and knows too much about Legos. I'm personally a battle-bots and rock crawler person but I've built dragsters before (because they wouldn't let me do anything else.) But all plastic is super fun though.

What about a reverse dragster? The huge amount of poweeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeer would make the dragster have a tendency to wheelie. Being FWD, the long nose (now a tail) would give stability!
